Births

Reference #032-582 in 1882 of the Ontario Vital Statistics records the birth of a daughter. She might have been named after her maternal grandmother, Caroline Birmingham nee Babcock in Crosshill or after her aunt Caroline Uttley, Nathan's younger sister in England.
     Name: Carolina
     When: 25 March 1882
     Where: Waterloo
     Sex: Female
     Father: Nathan Uttley,
                 Engineer, Waterloo
     Mother: Mary Birmingham
     When Reg: 17 April 1882
     Doctor: Dr. Bingham

Caroline, age 9, is included in the family of Nathan and Mary in the 1891 Census (Waterloo), and again at age 19 in the 1901 Census (Waterloo).

Her father's obituary in October 1903 tells us that "Carrie" was living at home with her parents and two younger siblings, Jonathan and Mary (Lena).

Frederick Adam Kalbfleisch was born July 9, 1884 in Tavistock, the son of Adam Kalbfleisch and Veronica Grien. Adam and Veronica were married in Sebastopol, Perth County, on March 30, 1883. No record of Frederick's birth has been found but the date of his birth comes from the 1901 census when Fred and seven siblings were living in Easthope Township South, Oxford County.

Frederick's father, named Adam in the marriage record, died soon after at age 36 on November 12, 1885 just a couple of months before the birth of a second son also named Adam. The 1891 census records Veronica Kalbfleisch, a widow at age 23, with three children: Frederick (7), Adam (5) and daughter Marion (2).

Veronica remarried in January 1892 in New Hamburg to a nephew of her deceased husband, Frederick C. Kalbfleisch who was a son of Adam's brother Conrad. Veronica died of Scarlet Fever in June 1900 in Tavistock. The 1901 census lists father Frederick Kalbfleisch, a widower at age 35, with three children from before his marriage - Frederick (16), Adam (15) and Mary (11); plus five more children: Elizabeth (9), Lottie A. (7), Alma M. (5), Edwin E. (3) and Lisette C. (born 1900).

Their first child, Edna C., was born April 7, 1904 in Waterloo. A later daughter, Dorothy E., was born April 2, 1906 and died on February 6, 1911 in Toronto so the picture can be dated to the winter of 1909-10.
